Community, Culture, and Sea Moss: Our Day with Jully Black and THE POWER OF STEP

Some days remind you exactly why you started a business in the first place. Monday, August 10th was one of those days for us.

We were invited to set up shop at DOAHL Dance Academy in Markham for an event with Canadian music icon Jully Black and her team, THE POWER OF STEP. What started as a simple invitation to hand out samples turned into one of the most meaningful days we've had since launching The Sea Moss Guy.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment we arrived, the energy in the room was undeniable. Jully and her team welcomed us with open arms, genuinely curious about our products and our story. They didn't just tolerate us being there, they championed us. Jully personally sent people over to our table, gave us shoutouts throughout the event, and came back to our table several times herself throughout the night to grab samples of our juice and gel. Her team followed her lead, and several of them left with sea moss gel and juices in hand.

We came prepared to sample and build relationships. Our main focus for the night was educating everyone who stopped by on what sea moss is and the benefits it can offer, from how to prepare it to how it can fit into everyday routines. By the end of the day, that focus on education had turned into real support for our small, family-run business, with the community's enthusiasm carrying the night.

What Community Support Really Looks Like

Moments like this matter. Being able to bring the community together for a good cause, and to see people show up and support one another, is exactly why we started this business in the first place. Being embraced by an artist and community as respected as Jully Black and THE POWER OF STEP is a reminder of what's possible when people choose to support each other. Throughout the night, we had the chance to talk one-on-one with so many people about sea moss, walking them through what it is, how it's prepared, and the ways it can fit into their daily routine. For a lot of guests, it was their first time trying sea moss, and getting to introduce something new to people while answering their questions was one of our favourite parts of the night.

An Unexpected Guest

Partway through the event, we had the chance to meet Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham. We shared the story of The Sea Moss Guy, from our roots to where we are today, and it was an honour to have that conversation in a room full of people who came together to celebrate movement, wellness, and community.

What This Day Meant to Us

Events like this are exactly why we do what we do. It's never just about the sale. It's about connection, education, and building relationships with people and communities who believe in what we're building. Monday gave us all three, and then some.

Thank you to Jully Black, the entire THE POWER OF STEP team, and everyone who stopped by our table to say hello, ask questions, or try a sample. This is what community-first business looks like.
